Hostel

El Gato de Fuego hostel is located in Calles Las Tablas No 2, Pedasi, Panama. The lovely fishing village of Pedasi has a quaint an friendly atmosphere. A place to unwind and enjoy some quiet. We wanted to create a safe, clean and comfortable space for those traveling on a budget. We have 3 daughters so we understand about the need to feel safe in a foreign environment. We are from South Africa so we speak English and Afrikaans. We can therefore also help those who speak Dutch and Flemish.

The main road is decorated with lovely homes and colours. The Hostel is just off the main road and a few meters from the town square or park. The church is the central point of the square and then there is a large area for people to sit and relax. Many town events are also held here. Families come out at night to sit and socialize while children play. There are plenty of restaurants with food ranging from local chicken dishes to Belgian pastries. You can stroll around the town and walk to most of the premises to enjoy different food. A Fresh Friday market is held at Pedasi Love every Friday morning from 10-12. Delicious breads, cheeses, pastries, vegetables etc are all waiting to be tasted and devoured!

You can surf and swim at various beaches. You can take a boat across to the beautiful Iguana Island. From July to October Pedasi is graced with the presence of whales and around the turtles hatch around September/October. There are some shops that offer local arts and crafts and beautiful gifts. There is a new art centre and local musicians entertain at night. We also have some artworks and plant products for purchase.

The hostel is housed in an old house of 5 rooms. As you enter, there is a small lounge area where you can sit and relax and chat or play a board game or plan your journey. There is also a verandah/terrace where you can sit outside and contemplate life and passers by.

Next there is a dining area and mini kitchen. The kitchen area has a microwave and urn. It has some basic crockery and cutlery. There are several tables so that you can sit and enjoy a meal that you have prepared or one that you have bought at the various town eateries. We hope to have a cafe at a later stage and serve cupcakes and other delicious goodies. We can prepare packed lunches if you request them. These will be ideal for your trip to Isla Iguana and won’t cost you an arm and a leg!

We are not offering breakfast at the hostel but we like to support our community and there are many places that offer delicious breakfasts within walking distance around the town square.

Then we have 3 separate rooms. The first room has a bunk bed (sleeps 2) and a curtain to add privacy. There is a cupboard for clothing and a fan. There are various plug points. All beds have a pillow and mattress with cover sheet and pillow case. A blanket can be given on request. This is generally not necessary as it is very humid. A top sheet isn’t even necessary.

Down the passage there are 2 separate toilets and then a bathroom with toilet, basin and shower.

There is another room with 2 bunk beds and a shelf, cupboard and wall fan. Leading off this room is a private room with 2 bunk beds. The room has a door and cupboard and wall fan. This room would best suit a family or perhaps a group traveling together.

The bunk beds have been custom built and we have added extra little touches – the numbers for each bed are made from pieces of driftwood and a cat has been painted around each bunk bed.

We have a stretcher bed available if someone has a child or they wish to add a bed to the last room sleeping 4.

We have a garden at the back but we are still working on this but can offer a simple barbecue area.

All quirky little touches aim to make you feel more at home and to set us apart from the normal hostel experience. What we might like in frills we hope to add in hospitality and a special experience.

We have a hand drawn map of all the little hotspots in town and we will do our best to guide you to places and adventures. We can help you make your experience more complete by joining a local yoga or Zumba class or have a massage to take away all the stress while you nibble on a freshly baked croissant!
